Vaishno Devi Yatra

This is a short post on our yatra to Vaishno Devi Shrine, situated in Katra, near Jammu. There are multiple posts on internet available which can give you a detailed and probably better itinerary of this yatra, however, from my experience, I couldn’t find a single post detailing do’s and dont’s and giving practical pointers and hence this post.

We flew in to Jammu airport from Bangalore and then hired a taxi to take us to Katra and back. There is a well organised association at airport controlling all bookings and rates are somewhat fixed with almost no scope of haggling. As of 2024, it costed us around 5K INR for an Innova cab for both ways. Another convenient way to reach Katra is by train from New Delhi station.

To demystify this yatra, one needs to understand about few places en route.

Katra – Basecamp for Yatra. Recommended accomodation is Niharika Complex which is very conveniently located and has a mess serving good vegetarian food. It has a locker room facility to keep luggage which yatris dont want to take with them to shrine. It also has counters for all tickets including Yatra registration parchis. Katra has a helipad also which is 10-15 mins drive from main city.

Bhawan – Area around shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi temple. This is the ultimate destination for yatris. It has few accommodation options but finding one near temple is recommended. One such option is Durga Bhawan which is next to temple. For food, one can go to Sagar Ratna restaurant. Sagar Ratna restaurant is in front of Bhairon baba ropeway ticket counter.

Sanjichhat – This is the helipad closest to Bhawan. From here, one needs to trek to the main temple at bhawan. Trek is easy to intermediate with each way taking not more than an hour. One can hire Strollers for baby or Palkis or Ponies to cover this trek if they wish.

Adhkuwari – This is a logical milestone in yatra as there are options to cover distance from Bhawan to this place via battery cars as well.

Bhairon Ghati – This hosts Bhairon Baba temple, and a darshan to the shrine is incomplete without coming here. It is connected by Bhawan through a ropeway, with each way taking not more than 15 mins. Trekking is also an option. The entire journey via ropeway can be done under 2 hrs.

Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine board offers a variety of services online which can be availed at their website. It includes accommodations at Katra and Bhawan, Rope way tickets, Atka Aarti Ticket, Helicopter tickets, Battery car tickets and Yatra Parchi.

Atka aarti happens every evening for which a fixed number of parchis (less than 500) are pre-sold. It allows one to get to see the old cave of Mata vaishno devi and a two hour long puja exclusive for devotees with parchis. It is a very convenient and recommended way to have darshan.

• Rates for all services are fixed by government and parchi is needed for all of them. However, you will get pestered for tips on top of it.
• Online bookings are highly advised. They will help cut your yatra time significantly.
• There is no cow milk available (at least easily) either in Katra or at Bhawan. Mostly powdered milk is used. It is advised to carry Amul tetra milk packs for small kids and babies.
• Weather changes very dramatically at hills. It is advised to carry woollens always.
• Helicopter tickets for return journeys are relatively easier to obtained on the spot and mostly available.
• There can be significant wait period for helicopter even if it is time slotted. This is especially true for the onward journey.
